CRL Clear RTV408 Neutral Cure Silicone - Cartridge

CRL RTV408 Industrial and Construction Silicone is a neutral cure, medium modulus, 100% Silicone Sealant that cures to a tough, flexible rubber when exposed to moisture. RTV408 features primerless adhesion to: aluminum, stainless steel, most plastics, rigid PVC (vinyl), phenolic resin, glass, ceramic, and most reflective-coated glasses. BASIC USES: Its fast cure time and easy tooling make it ideal for many in-house production applications; and it is non-corrosive to most building materials such as glass (including insulating glass), tiles, and sanitary equipment. It seals curtainwall joints; vinyl, steel and aluminum windows; and skylights. It is also used in vehicles, ships, aircraft, as well as for electrical insulation. This silicone does not cause corrosion in contact with metals. It is suitable for alkaline materials such as mortar and cement, and other applications where metal corrosion could be a problem. CRL RTV408 stays flexible and is resistant to cracking or becoming brittle in a wide range of temperatures approximately -65° to 400°F (-54° to 204°C). It can be applied at outdoor temperatures as low as -20°F (-29°C), provided that surfaces are clean, dry and frost-free, or on surfaces as high as 100°F (38°C). RTV408W and RTV408T contain a fungicide, and the cured sealant is mildew resistant.

CRL Water Clear Silicone Sealant is an optically clear acetic cure, 100% silicone sealant that cures in the presence of atmospheric moisture to produce a durable and flexible silicone rubber. Its unique weatherability enables it to retain its original properties, even after years of exposure.

Basic Uses

Water Clear Silicone Sealant is intended for building construction applications, and is particularly effective for glazing butt and lap shear joints and sealing curtainwall projections and other glass, plastic, and metal assemblies. Its exceptional clarity makes it the ideal sealant to use in frameless shower enclosures. It is also appropriate for general construction and industrial applications. Water Clear Silicone is packaged in two sizes of heavy plastic cartridges that feature removable, reusable, resealable screw-on nozzles with a screw-on cap for convenience and product savings. Water Clear Silicone cures quickly with a tack-free time of 10 minutes. It adheres to clean metal, glass, most types of wood, silicone resin, ceramic, natural and synthetic fiber, and most painted surfaces. Important Note

Exceptional clarity of product will not hide application or tooling errors. A small amount of bubbles may form during the curing process of the sealant, so considerations should be made up front regarding standards of appearance and subsequent repairs (e.g., limited to sight lines). Not recommended for use in the following applications: Glazing or edge sealing of insulating glass; copper, brass, magnesium, zinc, galvanized surfaces.

PROCEDURE FOR THE EFFECTIVE TREATMENT OF SAND-BLASTED GLASS

1. Due to the variable nature of the sandblasting process (i.e. different grit size and blasting pressure resulting in variable depth, etching configuration and amount of residual glass particles), before treatment with CRL TPC SURFACE PROTECTOR, sandblasted glass must be thoroughly washed and dried.

2. The CRL SURFACE PROTECTOR must be applied using a strong, padded cloth and a firm, circular and overlapping motion. The product should be allowed to dry (haze) and then it should be reapplied to ensure complete coverage.

3. When the surface is dry (i.e., the final "haze" has formed), the surface should be sprayed with plain water to test for uniform water beading. When the applicator is satisfied that the "beading" is uniform, the surface should then be washed with a mild detergent solution or an alcohol and water solution to remove all excess polymer (this "excess" is what sometimes looks like "stains" and makes the surface look darker in spots). Finally, the surface should be dried.

THIS PROCESS WILL YIELD A PERFECTLY UNIFORM, WELL-TREATED SURFACE THAT WILL TYPICALLY LAST FOR YEARS UNDER ORDINARY USE.

While this appears to be a complicated procedure, it really is not. Most people who treat sandblasted glass in this manner ultimately agree that it is really quite simple once you get used to the process.
